Eligibility
Students in good standing at Pitzer College. SIT requires students to have a 2.5 or higher GPA. Preference given to juniors and first semester seniors but sophomores are eligible if space is available.
Preparation
At least one African area studies course in literature or media, 历史, or political studies is strongly recommended. Several such options are offered at Pomona College. Suggested additional general preparation options include: Comparative Politics; Intercultural Communications; Language Culture and Society; Introduction to Inter国家/ Intercultural Studies; Introduction to Sociocultural Anthropology

Application
Students must first apply through Pitzer’s Office of Study Abroad and Inter国家 项目. If accepted by Pitzer, students will then be asked to complete the SIT application.

Spring Semester: Late January to mid-May
Required Courses
Students are required to take Senegal: Colonialism, the State and Society (taught primarily in English), Rethinking Global Security: Politics and Religious Pluralism in Senegal, a French or Wolof language course, and Research Methods and Ethics. In addition to these courses, students will undertake either an independent study project or internship.
Intensive Language
Students can take Intensive French language study or Intensive Wolof language study.
Independent Study or Internship

Credit Possible
Students will receive the equivalent of 4.0 Pitzer course credits for the successful completion of the five program courses.
Housing Options
Students have three homestays. Students will live with a Senegalese family in Dakar for six weeks, and have two shorter homestays in rural areas. Other accommodations during the program include small hotels, guest houses or educational institutions.
